Women in Literature: There are many patriarchal, sometimes misogynistic forces that work against letting women and girls define themselves and decide their own fate, which is a basic human right Custom Paper

There are many patriarchal, sometimes misogynistic forces that work against letting women and girls define themselves and decide their own fate, which is a basic human right. Our culture, our schools, our religious institutions, the media, our language, our family, sometimes our friends, boyfriends and husbands, in one way or another, try to define us.

We have seen this in our literature and heard this through the voices of the Rosies in the documentary we viewed. It is, therefore, a heroic girl or woman who insists, even tacitly, on self-definition. She does not need anyone’s approval, and this takes courage. She is a girl or woman who knows her worth, her value, her self and what path she will take. It is her life, and she defines it and her role in it.

We have read about such heroines during this semester: Elizabeth Bennett, Jane Eyre and Idgie Threadgoode.

Assignment:

Use extensive details and cited evidence from the text to discuss and prove the heroic nature of the three women I have listed above.

Make sure you understand what you are being asked for–what you are supposed to prove about these women.

Think about the women you choose. Read and reread what you write. Make changes when necessary to ensure you are making meaning. Gather plenty of evidence from the novels. Write down the page numbers on which the material you want to use appears, so you can document your citation. Make sure you docment your citations, MLA style. Be sure to have a Works Cited page. If you do not consult the MLA website, now would be a good time to start doing so.

HINTS FROM A WRITING TEACHER: Before you begin, free write your thoughts to figure out what you already know. Reread if you have forgotten or passed over the material too quickly. Write down the page numbers when you find what you want to quote. It’s easier if you divide your paper into parts: one part for each protagonist you choose. Make sure you have a nice transition between the sections. The opening, of course, is inclusive of all of them. The opening sets up the reader for what is to come, not in a five-paragraph essay way, but in a general way. Wrap up with a nice neat closing. Always think about the two most important aspects of good writing: meaning and the readers’ needs. Proof-read for errrors. Not separating ideas into paragraphs is an error, so is a lack of proper punctuation and spelling. Make sure your writing is arranged appropriately and flows from beginning to end. You do this by REVISING when necessary. Good writers read their work over many times to make sure they make sense and that their writing flows from one idea to another.
