This paper requires you to consider the problem of the self and then do outside research in order to support a thesis driven argument. This paper should utilize explication and analysis, have a thesis driven argument, use direct quotation, MLA citation and

library research. Use library databases and synthesizing outside research with primary texts in a thesis driven argument. Your paper

should begin by exploring one the authorized reading that I will attach as a separate document. You may choose one of any of the

attached readings. Talk about the issue of self as it pertains to that reading and use plenty of direct Quotations to support

yourself.

Develop your ideas through research. The problem of self may be broadly thought of as a series of questions that writers have engaged

with throughout literary history: what constitutes the self; is the self made in isolation, or is it a social construct; what

responsibility do we have to others, to our community, to the systems of power; how free are we and what limits our freedom; is the

self an illusion, or is it the fundamental construct of modern life?

Getting Started:
� The best way to go about getting started to decide which text/author you�re interested in writing about.
� Once you�ve selected a text, you will need to consider the guiding idea � the problem of the self. You should think broadly about the

issue, as you will want a subject that lends itself to library research.
� Your research should be guided by your own ideas and argument, which should be clearly stated in a thesis. What do you think about

the issue? Do you agree with the text, or with the outside sources you find in the library and through databases? Is your research

aimed at lending support to this claim, or do you intend to argue against it?
� Your library research should uncover what others have said about this same issue in order to develop your own argument, as well as to

offer alternative perspectives to your claims. As you do research, you will likely need to narrow the focus of your paper. For

example: if you intend to write about the existential conflict in Hamlet, you may want to narrow your focus onto a specific way in

which this conflict is engaged by the play � Hamlet�s word-play, or by focusing on his soliloquies. Your research should be focused on

essays and articles that directly engage with the text or author you�re writing about. This means your research should be focused on

databases and journals and books that deal with the literary subjects.

A successful paper will:
� State your thesis early and clearly.
� Be well organized, with like ideas grouped together in paragraphs with topic sentences that connect with your thesis.
� Incorporate support for your thesis in the form of specific examples, including material from credible sources. You�ll need to

include material from at least five research sources beyond the primary text to support your argument. Keep in mind that I�m primarily

interested in what you�re trying to argue. Source material should be used to support your claims; don�t get bogged down in summarizing

what other authors have to say.
