THE PAPER IS ABOUT KANT IT HAS TO RELATE TO JUSTICE SOMEONE THAT HAS READ Immanuel Kant, Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals (Hackett, 1993). ISBN 087220166
this is the guide to how to do the assigment:
If you were hoping for something terribly detailed, you’re about to be disappointed.
Students these days are masters of following directions, on the whole. Teachers used to complain about the lack of following
directions, but somehow there’s been a shift, and now, you want a list of ten things to do, and you will do those ten things, and
do them to the letter.
There’s nothing wrong with that, on the whole, but I am uninterested in giving you a list of things to do that I know full well
you’ll do with predictable success. Instead, the assignment is very simple:
Do the readings, sit down, and ask yourself this: if I had to write about my critical, well-reasoned, intellectual response to
what we’ve read/done/etc. in X pages, what would I write?
Write that.
If you have done all the readings – and actually read them with your mind as well as your eyes – and been in class for your
lectures and discussions, you will have something in mind that interested you, or incensed you, or made you think of
something else, or etc. That’s your topic.
This much freedom in an assignment might make you uncomfortable. Structure is good, but it isn’t everything. Nevertheless, I
don’t want a mishmash of half-argued rants. So here are a few parameters to keep in mind:
1. Write about our readings. At least one of them (and maybe just one of them).
2. Don’t write about five things generally. Write about one thing well.
3. I will be able to tell if you have read and understood the material. If I can’t, it doesn’t matter if you’ve read it or not.
4. Feel free to bring in anything else you need to in order to deal with the subject of 1.
5. Make this about what we’re studying now.
6. These are not and must never, ever, ever be summaries. Of course, you may need to summarize an argument in order to
deal with it, but it had better be a very small part of the overall paper.
7. Nor are these book reports. I have read these works, I don’t need to be told what is in them.
8. I’m more interested in what is going on in your brain than in your heart here; that is, don’t emote all over me. Be
passionate, care about it, whatever you need to do… but do it thoughtfully.
In case you need some further ideas, there are several ways to approach these:
Issue for Evaluation – What is the most important, interesting, or valuable part of the material? Alternatively, what was the
most mistaken, troubling, or unhelpful aspect of the material? What would be the most interesting question to consider for
evaluating whether we agree or disagree with the author? Don’t always be negative; critical is easy.
Topic for Clarification – What was most unclear or confusing in the material? What would be most helpful for everyone to
understand from the beginning if you had to teach this? Is there a term or concept that needs to be defined more clearly? Or a
place where it is especially hard to follow the argument? Be sure to indicate the specific point that needs to be clarified, and
give your best guess at an answer.
Connection to Other Material – Is there something in the material that has an interesting connection to something else you
have encountered? Something else you have read, seen or heard? Consider how the material relates to earlier topics this
semester, or from other classes, or from your life experience. Explain the connection and say something about why it struck
you as interesting.
Writing in or about generalizations is common, and average, and it will warrant you a common, average grade.
There are thousands of thoughts lying within a man that he does not know till he takes up the pen and writes.
