The aim of this assessment task is to provide you with a further opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the issues considered in this unit, by applying your learning to a practical situation.
Dilemmas: Leading and managing diversity
Identify a dilemma for leadership and/or management in an organisation with which you are familiar and write a case study of how the dilemma was handled. Critically reflect on the actions taken by the leader to resolve the dilemma and discuss alternative courses of action that you think may have resulted in better outcomes.
N.B. A dilemma is when people find themselves in situations that necessitate their choosing among competing sets of principles, values, beliefs or ideals.
The dilemma that you choose for your case study could be one that you have faced as a leader or manager or it could be one that you have observed in your own or another work-place.
In undertaking this task you should consider the following:
• The case study should describe the dilemma, the action/s taken in response to the dilemma and the outcomes of the attempt to address the dilemma.
• Identify principles and practices of leadership and management drawing on the unit materials and other references to critically discuss leading and managing change in a complex educational context.
• Present your analysis of the dilemma and alternative ways that it can be resolved, reflecting on the action/s taken and the outcomes by drawing on your ideas and insights about leading change, resolving conflict and managing diversity.
NOTE: This case study will be a confidential communication for the purposes of assessment in this unit. You should, however, apply the convention of using pseudonyms for the organisation that you describe as well as all named persons in the case study if you so wish.
