Re-see the whole film onvideo, consider the relevant reading and class dis-cussion, and think about the film Custom Paper

Choose a film shown in the course other than the two films you wrote about for your first two
papers. Re-see the whole film onvideo, consider the relevant reading and class dis-cussion, and think
about the film. Then write a (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font), 10 pages for graduate
students, in which you make some general claims about the film and how it works, discuss the
structure and development of the film in relation to your claims, and back all this up by close analysis
of a short sequence or two. The idea for this assign-ment is basically the same as for the previous
one, but this paper is to be written on a somewhat larger scale.
When you re-see your film, ask yourself, why was this film made? What is it all about? What is the
formal style or approach of the film? How is it shot and put together? What is its dramatic and
emotional world? What is the subject matter, and what is the film’s atti-tude to the subject and to
life in general? What issues does the film raise, what problems does it open up for consideration
social, political, philosophical, artistic? What does the film want to convey to audiences, or do to
audiences? What is its effect on a viewer? How is the story structure developed? What is the
nature of the actors and their performances? What kind of characters do we get? How does the
film use space, dcor, sounds, music?
Select a part of these considerations, one aspect of the film whatever seems most inter-esting
to you, and that you can discuss well in the space allowed. Explain your topic clear-ly and go on to
discuss it with as much reference to detail of the film as possible, ultimate-ly choosing a short
sequence or two and giving a close shot-by-shot interpretive reading. Tie your sequence analysis
closely to your more general claims about the film. Don’t tell us everything about every shot in your
sequence, but notice things relevant to your view of the film. Every detail you mention should have
a comment on its meaning or effect. Similarly, remember that you are writing for an audience who
has already seen the film; you do not need to summarize the entire plot. Rather, focus all the
elements of your discussion (including dis-cussions of plot events) on the central task of supporting
your argument about the film you choose. Remember to structure your paper according to proper
academic paper form (i.e. introduction, thesis statement, development, conclusion). Many students
find it useful to create an outline to use as a guide during the writing process.
For undergraduates, it is up to you whether to refer to the assigned reading to help clarify or
explain your own points. This is not meant to be a research paper, but your own critical essay,
reflecting your own thinking. Graduate students should definitely refer to the as-signed reading, but
again, only in such a way as to help along the students own argu-ment. For those who mention a
source or sources, give a page reference when you men-tion it and be sure to include a properly
formatted Works Cited section at the end of the paper.
