A profile presents a subject in an entertaining way that conveys its significance, showing us something or someone that we may not have known existed or that we see every day but don’t know much about.” (The Norton Field Guide to Writing 153)
Many articles (and even books) have been written about the Baby Boomers as a generation, explaining their characteristics, needs, and desires. More recently, Generation X has taken shape, traditionally defined as those who were born between 1961 and 1981 Today, a new generation appears to be taking shape. Sometimes called Generation Y or the Millennial Generation, they are between approximately 15-25 years old today.
Write a 6-8 page essay that profiles your generation (12 point Times New Roman font). Some questions that might help you to begin thinking about the angle to take in your profile include: What does it mean to be a “generation”? What are the essential characteristics of your generation? How is your generation different from those that came before (or after)?
Also, remember that “every generation is divided along the same lines of race, gender, and ethnicity that divide the wider society” (Reading Culture 44). So even though many of your peers may share some of the traits of the generation you seek to profile, you need to carefully explain and support the reasoning behind the traits you explore.
Your Essay Should Include:
1. An introduction that gives needed background information or context and appeals to your audience
2. A thesis statement that clearly states the angle you’re taking with your profile. Be sure to do more than simply describe a generation. Through your research, come up with an intriguing characteristic or problem that defines a particular generation.
3. An appropriate tone
4. Appropriate organization and paragraphing, including use of clear topic sentences. The paragraphs should be in a logical order and use transitions to show links between ideas.
5. A conclusion that provides closure to the essay.
6. Properly documented quotes or paraphrases from at least two articles from the library’s
databases.
7. Properly documented quotes or paraphrases from at least two reliable Internet sources (see
your website evaluation sheet)
8. Consistent, correct use of MLA style (including a works cited page)
9. Observance of the conventions of standard written English.
