These two novels have very different narrators. In The Fifth Child, the third-person narrator
sometimes provides an omniscient perspective, informing the reader of facts and events from a
perspective beyond that of any particular character, and sometimes the narrator confines his or her
perspective to that of the thoughts of Ben’s mother Harriet. The narrator of A High Wind in
Jamaica is a much more complex agent who is sometimes omniscient, sometimes confined to the
consciousness of individual characters (often this is Emily), and sometimes not omniscient,
confessing his ignorance of the facts and making jokes about the story he is telling. Write an essay
in which you contrast the tone, style, and content of both these narrators. Do not simply describe
them; go on to discuss how these two narrative styles influence the reader’s response to both
