2. On the organism or virus in question, do background research to include with your report
3. Analyze the article for inconsistencies in the methods, results or conclusions
4. Write a summary (see later) on the background information you collected and the major parts of the journal article

Be sure to give credit where credit is due in the form of in text citations and a references page

In the paper:

In the introduction of the organism, at a minimum, answer the following questions:

a. What is the organism being studied?
b. What is the taxonomy of the organism?
c. Method of reproduction?
d. What disease does this organism cause?
e. What special characteristics of the cells does this organism contain? (flagella, capsid, etc)
f. What identification methods are used to identify this organism?
g. What are the organism’s growth and nutrition requirements?
h. What is the basis of its genetic information? (DNA, RNA, protein) and how does itreplicate itself in brief.
i. Are there any resistance mechanisms currently known?
j. What is the reservoir for this organism?
k. How does it evade host-defenses to cause disease?
l. What is the prevalence of this disease in the US? The world?
m. Current diagnosis, treatment and prevention occurs by what methods?

In the journal article itself, the following sections are almost always present

a. Abstract: a general summary of the entire journal article
b. Introduction: brief background of the problem or question and the main reasons the study
is being conducted
c. Methods (or materials and methods): the step-by-step sequence of what was done during
the duration of the research
d. Results: the data collected from the methods that were used
e. Discussion and/or conclusions: what the researcher concluded based on the methods and
results obtained as it relates to the original question and the researcher’s interpretation of
what the results could mean to the world at large.
c. In the critical analysis of the journal article, answer the following questions at a minimum:
a. In your opinion, were the methods used appropriate to answer the original objectives?
b. Do the results support the researcher’s conclusion?
c. Do you detect any bias in the journal article?
d. Your conclusions based on your understanding of the organism and the journal article
