I.Format requirements (See Sample Paper)

FORMAT: Paper should be approximately 3-5 pages.
Every page should be double-spaced.
Margins should be 1 inch on all sides.
No Results section because this is a proposal for a Field Observation Study and not a report of research actually carried out.

A. TITLE PAGE: Page 1
1. Manuscript Page Header and Page Numbers: This is the first thing that appears on the title page. It consists of the first two or three words of the title and the page number is directly below the last letter of the header. It is used by the editors and reviewers to identify the pages of the manuscript. These should be present on every page of the document.

2. Running head: This comes next and typically consists of a couple of key words from the title. Type this running head flush left and in all capital letters.

3. Title: This should summarize the main idea of the paper. When typing the title, center it 1/3rd of the way down the page and capitalize only the first letter of important words. On the next double-spaced line is the author’s name and on the next double-spaced line is the institutional affiliation.

4. Instructor’s Name, Course, and Semester, Year should be included and centered as outlined in sample.

B. ABSTRACT: Page 2
The purpose of this section is to provide a brief and comprehensive summary of the proposal. It should include a brief description of the investigation being proposed, the methods you would use, and their discussion and implications.

C. TEXT: Page 3
Start this page by retyping the title (centered). On the next double-spaced line should be normal 5-space indented paragraphs. The word Introduction should not be typed. The main purpose of this beginning section is to inform the reader of the research question and to state a hypothesis that clearly states the proposed relationships between variables. Variables should be clearly operationalized. Indicate why the hypothesis is important and how it is unique compared to previous studies. This section starts out broad and becomes more and more specific. In this section, you should review the relevant literature as well as make clear the connection between previous research and the present proposed study. The final paragraph contains a statement which clearly and explicitly states why the study was proposed, such as: “”The purpose of the proposed study is”… or “The proposed study is designed to investigate”… “ Thus, this section should contain four paragraphs: the general introduction, the literature review, the connection of the present study to the literature, and the explicit statement of purpose.

1. METHOD: A new page should not be started for this section. The word Method should be centered and typing should be continued on the very next double-spaced line. The purpose of this section is to describe in clear detail how the proposed field observation study would be performed. This section contains two sub-sections, with headings: a) Participants and b) Procedure. If this were an actual study, another researcher should be able to replicate the study based on the information provided in this section
2. DISCUSSION: A new page should not be started for this section. The word Discussion should be centered and typing should be continued on the very next double-spaced line. The purpose of this section is to explore possible difficulties you might encounter in carrying out the proposed study. You address practical problems, methodological/design problems and ethical issues:

a. Anticipate practical problems in carrying out the study. Example: If you propose to investigate cultural differences in the distance maintained between couples dancing in a nightclub, would you expect to have difficulties observing due to the dim lighting in this environment? Would crowding be a problem? Why?
b. Anticipate methodological/design problems. Example: In the example above, the hypothesis relates culture to personal distance. Is it possible that observing couples in a nightclub might be a bad way to evaluate this hypothesis? Might it be the case that couples who go to a nightclub are romantically involved and the nature of their relationship, rather than their cultural background, would dictate the distance between them? Are there possible confounding variables due to the way you have designed the proposed study or the method you have proposed using?
c. Anticipate ethical problems. Field Observational studies raise special ethical questions because the nature of the study precludes getting informed consent from the participants. Researchers must be aware of the possible ethical problems involved in observing people for research purposes without their consent. There are a number of types of ethical problems: for example: a) Does your study propose to observe people who might become aware of being observed and be particularly uncomfortable (children; vulnerable populations such as homeless people, many of whom suffer from mental disorders)? b) Does your study involve observing people in a context where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy (for example, athletes in a locker room)? Try to think of all of the possible ethical problems involved in the study you propose.

D. REFERENCES: A new page should be started for this section. The word References should be centered and typing should be continued on the very next double-spaced line. Any citations made in the manuscript must be presented in this section. Follow the sample Research Proposal Paper for the exact format required. Each article, book chapter, etc. that you cite in the text of your paper should appear once in the Reference list, arranged alphabetically by the first author’s last name.
