One of the major assignments in this course asks you to write a Film Analysis. Throughout the semester, you will be seeing film clips from feature films and also from documentary films. Each of these will touch in some way on the issues of civility/incivility. The overall goal of this paper is to analyze film as a vehicle for expressing philosophical concepts and inviting thoughtful consideration of ideas. Here are some questions to ponder:

1. Does the “action” in film enhance your understanding and/or heighten your emotional response to questions of civility/incivility? Why do you think this is or is not the case? Be specific.
2. What are the ways in which film has the capacity to involve the viewer in the narrative of the movie? Be specific in discussing the film or films you have chosen for your analysis.
3. Do you find film to be a superior medium for creating a discussion of these ideas? Why or why not?

You have several organizational possibilities for this paper:
1. Choose one of the feature films that you have watched excerpts from in class. Watch the entire film and focus your analysis on that film. In this option, you might want to research the goals of the filmmaker and, perhaps, the screenwriter or producer as well.
2. Compare and contrast two or more feature films that we have watched [in part] and discussed in class. Which is the more effective medium for conveying the power of both civility and incivility? Why is one more powerful than another. Be specific in citing film techniques, scenes, acting, etc.
3. Compare and contrast creative [fictional] plots in films and the realities depicted in documentary-style films. Which is the more effective medium for prompting thoughtful consideration of civility/incivility? Why?
