Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills Custom Essay

Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research. The purpose of the annotation is to give you a summary of the research paper that will guide you when you write your literature review. As such, it should contain sufficient detail for you to be able to recall the major points of the paper from reading it so you don’t have to re-read the paper in its entirety when writing. First, locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic. You’ll want to find papers that examine the same or similar variables to your study to gain an understanding of what is already known about your topic to help you plan your own project. NOTE: 1. YOU MUST ANNOTATE A QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH ERPORT—NOT AN EDITORIAL, SUMMARY PAPER, REVIEW PAPER, PROPOSAL PAPER OR ANY OTHER SORT OF PAPER. This means the paper reports on research where the authors collected primary data typically from human participants and are reporting what they found. Typically this will be either an experiment or a survey. You MUST have approval from Susan for your articles. 2. YOU MUST CHOOSE A PEER REVIEWED PAPER THAT IS PUBLISHED IN AN ACADEMIC JOURNAL. Conference papers are not acceptable. Book chapters are rarely acceptable and must be approved by the teacher prior to being annotated. Not sure if your paper is peer reviewed? Ask! Second, cite the book, article, or document using APA style. The citation goes at the top of the annotation. Finally, write a detailed annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the article. Include the following sections. In detail: 1. In your own words summarize the main points of the paper. Be sure to include EACH AND EVERY ONE of the following: a. Research questions/ hypotheses b. Variables and operationalizations c. Sample and sampling method d. Method e. Findings and conclusions The summary should be the majority of the annotation. Do NOT directly quote unless there is a clear need to. Research questions and hypotheses are usually quoted while typically other content is paraphrased. Briefly: 2. Explain how this work illuminates your research topic. How can you use the info contained in it for your own proposal? 3. Compare or contrast this work with another you have cited or have read. 4. Evaluate the authority or background of the author—that is, explain why we should trust their work. 5. Comment on the intended audience. Who is the article written for? Why do you think so? Important considerations: 1. When writing be sure to USE YOUR OWN WORDS. If you quote or paraphrase, but sure to use appropriate quotation marks and page references so it is clear what words are your own versus what is taken directly from the article. This is a key point of academic integrity so be sure to be very careful! 2. The length of your annotation may vary considerably as some papers may be very germane to your topic; others may be less so as well as some papers may be short while others long. The annotation should be long enough to accomplish the tasks explained here completely. That is, when you’ve completed these tasks well, then the annotation is finished, regardless of how long it is. The following example uses the APA format for the journal citation: Waite, L. J., Goldschneider, F. K., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51(4), 541-554. https://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/ref/research/skill28.htmless
