Australian Rural Health

After a team analysis of the case study; Seatown, it is evident that this community suffers from inequalities shared by most rural and remote towns. To combat these inequalities we have broken down the social determinants of health that best influence the lower health status of Seatown. The main determinants were the social gradient, Work, Social exclusion and support and Food (Marmot & Wilkinson, 2003). From this we applied strategies and interventions specific to the factors affecting this rural community. DETERMINANTS Social Gradient It is evident that those who are situated in lower socioeconomic areas are more inclined to suffer premature death and have higher mortality rates of most illness and diseases (Marmot & Wilkinson, 2003). Seatown would be considered very low on the social ladder due to its geographic isolation some 500km inland and from its nearest neighbour. This isolation is associated with issues of limited employment options, mostly unskilled labour leading to workplace injuries. Additionally; insecure employment, faulty housing, few assets, poor education and psychological & physiological wear and tear all contribute to this low standing in the social ladder (Marmot & Wilkinson, 2003).
